living-room progress : put a skirt on it !

Tuesday, September 02, 2014

After only four months in the house, our living-room is obviously still in work in progress. We had bought these two chairs at Multiyork, Newbury back in February when we came to choose a house. We chose this white and blue damask pattern, with a very classic shape. And since we moved in, I have been on the hunt for an occasional table. My intend was not only to fill that space but also to hide that awkward under-the-stairs-corner, where my husband has his music equipment.

I first used this small stool from TKMaxx (Kennet Center, Newbury), that I'd painted gold.
It did the job for a few weeks, while I was still looking for a bigger round table. I finally found it at my local second-hand store, for a very decent price (I think £20).
The size was perfect, and I didn't care much about the finish nor the legs shape because my plan was to put a skirt on it.
So I made the skirt in a simple linen fabric, but with seven contrasting white cotton pleats to give it a bit more personality. And I fully lined it for two reasons : 1/ I wanted a "heavyweight" look, and 2/ I hate hemming.
It's already better than when we first visited the house ...
I still need to get a custom glass top to protect it and to allow us to use it as a proper table (cough-put wine glasses on it-cough !)
I might make another skirt in the future, maybe with a patterned fabric, but we'll get to that when the rest of the room is a bit more complete. I mean, look at this great patterned skirted table, isn't it gorgeous ?
Have a great day !
