DIY (and inexpensive !) statement art

Saturday, February 28, 2015

When I shared a few pictures of my living-room (there and there), I mentioned that the mini-gallery wall above the sofa was temporary. Well, it had been temporary for over 6 months now, so I had to find a better solution. The idea was to find or create a much larger art, without breaking the bank. And there it is now !
I came up with this idea of using a large picture, but divided into multiple frames. So I bought the cheapest clip-on frames possible at Dunelm and I started looking for a good black and white picture. When I saw this one of James Dean, I was sold ! Then I used this brilliant website called "The Rasterbator" to divide the picture. I could have enlarged it to fill the entire wall if I wanted too!
I think the result is edgy and contemporary, yet elegant. And I believe the entire "project" cost me about £25, and I can print any other image whenever/if get tired of this look.
Remember the living-room before ?
And now:
That's the picture from the listing before we moved in.
And there it is now:
I could just sit there and gaze at James ! Handsome and timeless James ... So what do you think ? Love it or hate it ?

Stylish designer: Samantha Johnson Design

Tuesday, February 24, 2015

Today, I wanted to showcase the beautiful work of Samantha Johnson, a leading UK designer based in Maidenhead, Berkshire - a neighbour of mine then ! Often featured in the press, she works on multiple scaled projects, from single rooms to entire houses in the Thames Valley/London area, with a particular attention to details and textures. Her style is elegant, sophisticated, modern and traditional at the same time. Definitely a role model for a future designer !

A virtual dining-room with a quirky wallpaper

Tuesday, February 17, 2015

I am spending the week in my family in Brittany, and I've been wallpaper shopping with my Mum. We stumbled across an amazing wallpaper featuring blue plates, and I've immediately pictured it in a coastal inspired dining-room. This would be a really fun room to design !

I've used the Blue Porcelain Plates wallpaper from Studio Ditte for this board. Sure, it is a bold choice, but so very sophisticated ! They also designed a coloured version, even quirkier !
Of course, you can mimic the look with less commitment just using real plates. Very traditional yet elegant.

E-design: a masculine console

Friday, February 13, 2015

Life has somehow been a bit strange these past few days. A mix of really great and a little less great.

Everyone has been sick around me in the post 3 weeks, and I feel like I might get sick myself at any time (damn you, stomach bug), so I'm hoping and praying. Something really sad will probably happen to my family shortly, and we're preparing ourselves to say goodbye to the kindest person I've known so far. Winter and darkness is really getting on my nerves. And it's Friday 13th. And I have a week late of laundry to iron before packing. Sigh.

But ! I've been working with friends of mine on their living-room redesign and their kitchen extension, which is soooo exciting ! I've been for a good 45 min run this morning, right before the rain (thanks Karma !). I'm leaving tomorrow for France for half-term. I've had a chat with a designer I admire earlier this week, and it was very interesting and stimulating, I'll come back to that later. And I treated myself with a homemade killer blow dry after my run. Nothing beats a good hair day.

As you can see, I'm constantly torn between a big smile and a worry face.

So this morning I was in the mood for a little virtual design, with a masculine/winter touch and I came up with this. Nothing extravagant, just a simple console styled with few but beautiful pieces, all available in the UK.

This console is amazing. You'd think it's concrete, but it's actually faux shagreen. And at £675, it is a splurge but a real statement piece. Sometimes, it's just better to have fewer but more precious things in your home ...

Now, if you'll excuse me, I must get back to my domestic-Goddess-packing-before-leaving day.

Have a great week-end !!

I do love to play with my lamps !

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

Some might say I have too many lamps in my house. I don't think it to be even possible, light has such a major importance in Interior Design. I have ceiling lights but I never use them, or just in emergency. Their light is not remotely flattering or welcoming.

Instead I use different lamps in every room to create a diffuse, cosy light and a nice atmosphere.

I had purchased these lamps from TKMaxx a while ago for our dining-room and I recently swapped them for our (previously) bedside lamps. And to the living-room they went. Still following ?

And even before (image from the listing when we found the house):
Now (still in progress):
I still have a lot to do in that room: switching the art above the sofa for something bigger (this was a temporary fix, and the scale is clearly wrong). Also I'm not sold on the bamboo side tables, at least not with the new lamps, so I'm still on the hunt for a replacement (maybe in a slightly darker wood for a more luxurious feel ? or a glossy white / Parson-style table ? I also like this one)

Here's how the wooden lamps used to look in the dining-room:
Same room now:

I love both styles, but I think the blue ones are a bit more vibrant and glamorous in that spot, and they look great with the art and the console skirt I made a few months ago.
(they actually look a little less Royal Blue)

What do you think ? Any suggestion for great / affordable art for my living-room ?
